Useful Advice

Travelling

There was a time when hiring a car or going on an organised tour was the only realistic way of exploring Gozo, as public transport was almost non-existent.  However this is no longer the case as Public Transport and Hop-on Hop-off tour buses now meet many daytime ferry arrivals and there is also a comprehensive network of ordinary bus services radiating from the capital city Victoria.

Public Transport

The ordinary public bus service on Gozo and Malta is now operated by the Malta Public Transport private bus company and was significantly improved in 2015.  Bus services now run at least once per hour from Victoria to all parts of the island (including during the evening) and a direct bus to/from Victoria meets every ferry arrival and departure from Malta.  For further details see the http://www.publictransport.com.mt/ but note that although the buses may look the same as those on the mainland, unlimited travel tickets purchased on Malta cannot be used to travel on buses in Gozo.

Two bus companies provide Hop-on Hop-off tours on Gozo using open top double deck buses and these are very popular with tourists.

Taxis

Taxis are available for getting around the Island of Gozo.  Fares are based on meters, which are government regulated and standard for all companies, but they are not always used. If a meter is not running, make sure to agree on a price before starting a journey.

In Rabat you can find three shopping arcades on the main street – Tigrija Palazz, The Duke Shopping Complex and the Arkadia Commercial Centre.

The food stores open from 7.00 to 19.00. Other shops opening hours are during week days from 9.00 till 13.00 and from 16.00 till 19.00.
